The Tiny Bead That's Ruining Our Water

30/12/2015

Microbeads have been losing popularity for years due to their negative impacts on the environment. Don’t know what microbeads are? You’re not alone. Microbeads are tiny plastic beads that have been used in beauty products for years. They are used as an exfoliating particle to slough off dead skin and range in products from body scrubs and facial cleansers to moisturizers and even toothpaste.

When they were first created, microbeads were a dream. They are cheap to manufacture and work well as an exfoliating ingredient. However, they are also not biodegradable. They are so prevalent in beauty products that billions of microbeads get flushed down the drain every day and end up in local water sources that then lead to larger water sources. This is essentially the same as dumping all of your plastic bottles into the water- except it’s worse. The beads are so tiny that they cannot be cleaned out of the water and many fish and aquatic life end up eating the microbeads. The plastic is toxic for fish and animals when ingested, and then the fish eating the microbeads eventually ends up on our plates, also poisoning us. All living creatures eventually die from ingesting too much plastic.

This problem is so big that it is ruining our water. A large part of the pollution in The Great Lakes, the world’s largest source of freshwater, is from microbeads. According to the State University of New York, there are anywhere from 1,500 to 1.1 million microbeads per square mile in the water.

As of today, the U.S. has successfully banned microbeads in beauty products in the Microbead-Free Water Act (read here: https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2015/12/28/statement-press-secretary-hr-1321-s-2425 ). This is a huge step forward in having cosmetics creating healthier products and will require big changes from many large companies such as Neutrogena, Clean N' Clear, Aveeno, Bath and Body Works, Bliss, Clarins, Clinique, Clearasil, Caress, Dermalogica, Dior, Kiehl's, Olay, Ponds, AXE, Simple, Mur Ad, Acne Free, Up & Up, Hempz, Guerlain, and many more. It’s scary to think that many synthetic ingredients in our skin and beauty products can have such damaging effects on the environment and human health. We are coming into a time when people want to take control of what’s in their products, from food to the beauty industry. People are starting to care more about their health and don’t want to be lied to about what they are putting into and on their bodies. It’s vitally important to be aware of what you are buying- make sure to support companies that strive to provide quality products with safe ingredients that are organic, vegan, and cruelty-free.

Holiday Celebrations, Without Regret

THE HOLIDAYS ARE HERE!!! As everyone celebrates with gifts and tasty temptations everywhere, it can be harder than usual to get all of the nutrition you need and avoid bad foods. However, there’s nothing wrong with indulging a little! It’s all about balance and you shouldn’t ever feel deprived. This holiday season, it’s easy to make all your favorite treats just by making a few small substitutions in your recipes. Check out our favorites below!

  • Butter: Butter is fairly easy to substitute for. Coconut oil is one of our all time favorite substitutes for sweet treats. Olive oil or sesame oil also work well in less sweet recipes, and there is now vegan shortening available at many health food stores for recipes that call for shortening or margarine.
  • Milk: Milk is probably the simplest recipe to substitute. Almond milk, cashew milk, coconut milk, hemp milk, and soy milk all work as substitutes to cow’s milk.
  • Eggs: You might think that eggs are complicated to replace, but there are a few substitutes that work just as well. There is now something called a VeganEgg, which is probably the closest substitute as taste is concerned. You can also use one tablespoon of ground flax seeds mixed with three tablespoons of water to replace an egg. Mashed banana also works as a substitute, as does applesauce.
  • Honey: Honey can easily be replaced with agave nectar, maple syrup, rice syrup, or coconut syrup to match the natural sweetness of honey and contribute to the browning effects in dishes.
  • Cream: For cream, you want to use something thicker than just a non-dairy milk substitute. Coconut milk is probably one of the creamier substitutes, while cashew milk is a perfect match for sweetness and texture.
  • Sugar: Coconut sugar is a lower glycemic substitute for sugar and helps your sweet treats to be a little more nutritious.

Your body will thank you for treating it kindly by making these few small substitutions, and your taste buds won’t be able to tell the differences! Don’t feel bad about indulging a little, especially when spending time with family and friends!  Have a safe and happy holiday season!

For many people, the idea of going vegan has many drawbacks and concerns over having to restrict what you eat to an extreme degree. Perhaps in the past this might have been true, but recent advancements and interest in the vegan world have led to many healthy advancements and alternatives in some of our favorite non-vegan products such as vegan cheese, mock meats, and milk alternatives including almond milk, cashew milk, hemp milk, and more.

In the span of just one year, Don Thompson has gone from being the CEO of McDonald’s to the polar opposite- a plant based startup called Beyond Meat that specializes in creating healthy, nutritious, non meat products such as burgers, chicken strips, and more.

It’s no secret that McDonald’s sales have been dropping recently. Despite numerous efforts to turn things around, business has been declining steadily for the fast food giant. Promotions such as the breakfast menu being provided all day and “healthier” food options just aren’t cutting it any more for McDonald’s. Globally, sales have dropped by 2.3% as McDonald’s struggles to find it’s place in the changing world of food.
