In the span of just one year, Don Thompson has gone from being the CEO of McDonald’s to the polar opposite- a plant based startup called Beyond Meat that specializes in creating healthy, nutritious, non meat products such as burgers, chicken strips, and more.
It’s no secret that McDonald’s sales have been dropping recently. Despite numerous efforts to turn things around, business has been declining steadily for the fast food giant. Promotions such as the breakfast menu being provided all day and “healthier” food options just aren’t cutting it any more for McDonald’s. Globally, sales have dropped by 2.3% as McDonald’s struggles to find it’s place in the changing world of food.

People are starting to take their health more seriously, and fast food companies are struggling to try to provide options that are healthier, but people don’t believe the hype for many reasons. Good quality, nutritious food simply cannot be manufactured for the same cheap price and people are intelligent enough to understand that fast food restaurants cannot provide the nutrition that they are looking for.
One of the things that Don Thompson was looking for when he made the switch is a company that can provide high quality, nutritious, but still delicious food for its consumers. He noted that the team at Beyond Meat has proven “that you can actually have great taste and high quality with plant based proteins- even in a burger!” The CEO of Beyond Meat, Ethan Brown, mentioned “Don’s expertise and leadership is invaluable as we seek to deliver on our promise of enabling consumers to eat what they love, without any downsides.” They hope to use Don’s experience in innovating to help them develop their healthy food products.
Beyond Meat has already garnered much attention for their goals. Microsoft founder Bill Gates is one of their investors, while they are also being backed by General Mills. Some of their products include completely plant based burgers, sliders, grilled chicken strips, chicken tenders, chicken poppers, beef crumble, beef meatballs, and more. They hope that through these products, they can perfectly replace animal protein with plant protein- resulting in improving human health, positively affecting the earth, conserving natural resources, and respecting animal welfare.
What do you think about the CEO of McDonald’s switching over to a vegan company?
