For many people, the idea of going vegan has many drawbacks and concerns over having to restrict what you eat to an extreme degree. Perhaps in the past this might have been true, but recent advancements and interest in the vegan world have led to many healthy advancements and alternatives in some of our favorite non-vegan products such as vegan cheese, mock meats, and milk alternatives including almond milk, cashew milk, hemp milk, and more.
Despite this, one thing that the vegan community has been missing is a somewhat basic staple- the egg. Eggs are used in everything from baking recipes to simple breakfasts, and it’s quite difficult to find anything that can completely replace them.
It’s no surprise that vegans everywhere are rejoicing at the announcement of the VeganEgg! The VeganEgg is being released by the company FollowYourHeart, which is the brand behind popular vegan products such as Vegenaise and other plant based products. The egg itself has been 10 years in the making to ensure that the taste and texture are extremely comparable to a real egg, only much healthier. The VeganEgg is gluten free, cholesterol free, non-GMO, kosher, and free of common allergens, making it the perfect egg substitution for both vegans and people who are trying to improve their health alike.
Not only is the actual egg industry full of horrible conditions for chickens and hens laying eggs, being cited as the most abused and neglected animals in the animal agriculture industry, but there are many environmental and health concerns related to eating eggs. 95% of eggs come from caged birds, while “free range” birds are still crammed about 20,000 into one barn. The space they have is so small that the hens are unable to ever spread their wings in their lives, and they also may never see daylight but only live in the barns. Since male chicks cannot lay eggs, over 200 million male chicks are ground up alive every year. Human health can also be negatively affected by eating eggs, as eggs contain a high amount of cholesterol and saturated fat.
Eggs are a staple in many of our diets as well as being a favorite food for many. What do you think of the VeganEgg? Would you try it?
